As the national reference laboratory we offer various tests for the detection of a wide range of herpesviruses in companion animals, livestock and wild animals. These include bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), the causative agent of Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2), the main causative agent for sheep-associated Malignant Catarrhal Fever (MCF), suid herpesvirus 1 (SuHV-1), which causes Aujeszky Disease in swine and pseudorabies in many domestic species, feline herpesvirus 1, the causative agent of feline rhinotracheitis and finally koi herpesvirus (KHV), which causes gill necrosis and deaths among carp species.
Furthermore, our diagnostic offer comprises tests for several other important epizootic diseases in livestock, including IBR, bovine leukosis, transmissible gastroenteritis and bluetongue disease, but also common viral agents in domestic and livestock animals, such as equine herpesvirus 1 / 4 (EHV-1, EHV-4), which cause respiratory, neurological disease and abortion in horses, bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV-3), the causative agents for shipping fever in bovine species, and viruses causing diarrhoea such as rota-, corona- and enteroviruses in pigs.
Various virus families can be identified by means of electronmicroscopy. More details can be found here.
As the first veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Switzerland from 2019 we offer analyses for virus profiling using next generation sequencing (NGS). Learn more about it under research projects, News and ViroScreen (PDF, 376 KB).
